1. 9 W Walton St | $58.750m

9 W Walton. Ken Griffin, the billionaire hedge fund manager and founder of Citadel, made headlines with his record-breaking purchase of a penthouse at 9 W Walton in Chicago. In 2018, he purchased the property from the developer for $58.75 million, setting a new benchmark for the most expensive home ever sold in the city. At the time, the penthouse spanned multiple floors of the building, but was still raw space and needed to be designed and finished. The home has since been divided into smaller homes and most sold off to new buyers (including Governor JB Pritzker).
